Indiana may lose 2,400 more jobs

BURNS HARBOR, Ind. (AP) – ArcelorMittal says it might lay off as many as 2,400 employees at its Burns Harbor steel plant in January.

The company has notified the United Steelworkers and other stakeholders about the possibility of an “indefinite layoff” at the Porter County plant beginning in the second half of January.

It said this week that the recent drop-off in global steel production and its previously announced plan to reduce production in North American by 40 percent play into the decision.

United Steelworkers District Seven Director Jim Robinson says the union is negotiating with ArcelorMittal to minimize the number of layoffs. He says any talk of the size of the layoff is premature.

The Burns Harbor plant is located 10 miles east of Gary.
