R&D (research and development) jobs recruiting continues to grow in many sectors. This is the case due to the importance of R&D in future company products and earnings.
U.S. Bureau Of Labor Statistics | More Jobs Gains
The Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported today that 661,000 new non-farm jobs were added in September. This again lowered the unemployment rate by .5% to 7.8%.
Several employment sectors added jobs. This included the Leisure and Hospitality sector which added 318,000 jobs, the Healthcare & Social Assistance area, which added 108,000 jobs and the Services Industry which added 36,000 segment.
Additionally, the Retail Trade sector added 142,000 jobs, the Manufacturing area, had an employment rise of 66,000 jobs and the Professional and Business Services rose by 89,000. Moreover, the Wholesale Trade sector added 19,000 jobs, the Financial Activities region was up by 37,000 in September, the Transportation & Warehousing segment was up by 74,000, the Information sector added 27,000 and the Construction sector added 26,000 jobs.
Research and Development Has More Jobs Promise
These BLS jobs numbers are fine, but more job recruiting can result from increased R&D projects. R&D is already adding engineers, scientists, information technology (IT), technical and manufacturing technology professionals to burgeoining fields like artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, internet of things (IoT) and virtual and augmented reality.
R&D jobs recruiting in hot areas like artificial intelligence is impacting many other industries. This is leading to increased staffing appetite for not only self-teaching algorithms, smart machines and natural language processing (NLP) algorithms, big data and data analytics, but also technicians, marketing, sales and administrative staff to manage R&D organizations.
Efforts To Improve R&D Recruiting
Much more needs to be done by government to assist research and development projects. Incentives like R&D tax credits can urge companies to invest more in R&D. Additionally, recruiting more talented STEM teachers to mint future research and development contributors and leaders. This can have peripheral benefits on recruitment of other job areas.
Additionally, within companies, staffing departments need to improve their efforts to attract R&D candidates. One way to do so is reviewing your company’s overall message to ensure that you have positioned yourselves as a viable place for R&D talent to work.
Additionally, staffing managers can identify better methods for recruiting candidates for their companies. This can include a) identifying competitors b) uncovering viable research and development candidates within those competitors c) contributing to research and development blogs and magazines to get noticed by the R&D candidates you seek and d) connecting to LinkedIn candidates who may become future candidates.
Then even if a valued research and development recruitment candidate turns your job offer down, you will have many ready R&D replacements.
