Labor Day Offers A Time of Jobs Reflection

Today is Labor Day. What does Labor Day mean to you? Traditionally it has been a time to reflect about your job and employment benefits gained by organized labor. Unfortunately, this period, which is marked by severe economic uncertainty and reduced job prospects, has clouded that time of job reflection.

With this difficult employment backdrop many are offering advice on employment moves. For example, Jay Leno contributed to yesterday’s Parade Magazine piece entitled, “You Can Get A Job Now.” Though he does offer some nice employment and interview pointers, such as persistence pays off, he is not a jobs expert. Instead, one should try to consider the source of such employment advice.

My advice is based upon over 20 years as a recruiter and staffing expert including placing many people worldwide for such clients as ITW, Intermatic and Wrigley Company. During that time I have noticed that there is no magical formula to landing your next job. I agree with Mr. Leno that persistence pays off during a job search. Additionally, you should have an employment plan, which tracks your daily employment activities and grades you at week’s end on how productive your interview and employment efforts were and what changes you need to make for landing your next job. Please tune in every week and I will share more words of wisdom on your job search.
