Engineering Success Requires STEM Proficiency
Engineering continues to be at the foundation of many major technology breakthroughs. Artificial intelligence, robotics, virtual reality, augmented reality, and internet of things advancements require more and better trained engineers! Therefore, much more needs to be done to improve STEM education and retraining to produce additional skilled engineers.
New Ideas For Enhanced STEM Education Yield More Engineers
I was recently interviewed by the Managing Editor of the predominant worldwide design engineering publication Design News about ways to improve engineering education and career advancement. Please click here for the entire article (especially view the slideshow which details all my suggestions).
Among my recommendations were novel ways to improve STEM education (e.g., further engaging Lego as a STEM learning tool), employing apprenticeships and internships to expand your engineering network, joining engineer associations and communities to increase your connections and skills and life-long learning to keep your engineering talents current.
Engineering At The Epicenter of AI, Robotics, IoT, AR & VR
Until now many technologies like artificial intelligence, internet of things, augmented reality, virtual reality, and robotics have been just hype. That’s changing.
With the proliferation of text-generating tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Apple’s recent launch of its Apple Vision Pro VR/AR mixed reality headset these perpetually rumored innovations are now becoming reality!
Furthermore, the recent successes of chipmaker Nvidia suggest there’s some substance behind the AI buzz. Nvidia makes chips essential to building complex AI systems. As a result, they recently saw their stock exponentially rise to become the chip industry’s first $1 trillion company!
Nvidia, other AI chip companies like Marvell and Advanced Micro Devices as well as cutting-edge robotics, IoT, AR and VR driven companies are continuing to launch new products and grow. This will be a catalyst for even more engineering recruiting.
Bureau of Labor Statistics Proves More Engineers Needed
Recent figures from the BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) showed 187,000 new jobs created last month. Additionally, the unemployment rate remained low at 3.5%. Moreover, my engineering recruiting team has learned anecdotally from numerous clients that the real unemployment rate for engineering talent continues to be near zero!
Engineers are high paying jobs which drive many of these pioneering breakthroughs. Unfortunately, there continues to be far more engineer employment demand than skilled engineering supply to fill these engineers job openings. This is creating a major staffing void for many companies.
